Hi Philippa, thank you for joining us. Let's start at the beginning, what was your first job/role after education?

Teaching English as a Foreign Language in München, Germany. (Great Weissbier!)

And what is your current role and what is your favourite part about it?

Founder & CEO of Hugin Consulting. My favourite part is being my own boss and being able to choose to do what I love best: helping others transform their lives and businesses through the power of community.

How would you describe your career path from teaching to CEO?

As a climbing frame rather than a career ladder. Up, down, to the side, and resting a while to enjoy the view!!

As a business owner, what do ou find is the most important task you carry out each day?

Connecting with people, because that is the first stage in creating new clients.

There has been a lot of uncertainty in the last few years, are you feeling optimistic, realistic or pessimistic about 2022?

Optimistic about 2022. (I was optimistic about 2020 too – in every crisis there is opportunity. I seek it out or create it).

We all know being a business owner is never easy, what is the most stressful task in your current role?

Getting everything together in time for the launch of the Thriving Community Summit 25th April. It’s the first time I have launched such an event so the learning curve is very steep (and it’s enormous fun too).

Hindsight is a wonderful thing! - What advice would you give to your 21-year-old self about your career journey?

Be ok with not knowing what you want to be when you grow up because that nurtures your curiosity and openness .

That is excellent advice Philippa, something we should all take on board at any age. Looking towards to future, personally or professionally, what are your goals for the future?

A goal is a place to come from, not to go to.

So, I say: "I am the go to person in the community space, running a million-dollar company, always on the front edge of development and serving small business owners to create recurring revenue and lifestyle freedom through community & membership sites."

It is great to get a little more insight into you and your journey Philippa and now it would be great to hear a little more about your upcoming summit. What was the inspiration behind it?

I have a natural talent for invigorating communities and getting others to engage and want to stick around. I also am tapping into my teaching, coaching and mentoring skills to create this company I am building now.

Nothing is ever straightforward! Did you have to overcome any hurdles in the lead up to the launch date?

Up until about 9 weeks ago I was unknown in the community space. I have reached out to well over 400 people (numerous times each) to get the high-quality 30 speakers I have for my summit. I don’t do things small. I am also very persistent.

We've read all about the Summit, and what can be expected for attendees, but what do you think makes it special?

I understand the complexity of the positions involved and bring my skills and knowledge in neuroscience, psychology, pedagogy and productivity to ensure people are focusing their most precious assets – their energy, attention and time on those high-impact task and their zones of genius in business and life. When you thrive, your community thrives.

What are you aiming to achieve with the event?

For entrepreneurs & small business owners to build thriving communities that give them financial freedom and the lifestyle they yearn for.

You have lots of exciting things in the works Philippa, tell us a little more.

The Thriving Community Summit 25-29th April, The Thriving Community Leaders Programme is launching beginning of in May and The Thriving Community Podcast launching mid-May. I am very optimistic about the coming year as I am launching my 5-day, 30+ speaker summit, my high-ticket programme, my podcast and building my own brand-new thriving community. Plenty to look forward to!

Lots of things to keep you busy there! How do you stay motivated?

Being the creator of my world. I get to choose what I do, and I get to create and learn, every day and reminding myself that I am Philippa Gillström, CVO – Chief Validation Officer in my life.

Something we can all learn from there, thank you. With all your exciting projects, do you have time for fun?!

To unwind I tend to get my hands dirty – either painting (or cut and paste collage artwork – even messier!!!) or gardening.

Thank you for taking the time to talk to us, we have one final question we like to ask our interviewees as the business owner is all about sharing and building people up, so, if you could give a single piece of advice to a start-up entrepreneur what would that be?

Just get started. Don’t wait for it to be perfect. AND, get comfortable with feeing discomfort. That feeling is the key to growth. (Ok, that was two things!)

Thank you for taking the time to talk to The Business Owners and our community.
