• The Business Owner

A look to the future

With Eoin McQuone

We love speaking with business owners, and our recent chat with Founder and Chief Carbon Coach at 'Go Climate Positive', Eoin McQuone, was no different. We thought sharing this story on #WorldEarthDay was very apt, as not only does it have some great insight from a successful business owner into the life of starting and owning a business, it also gets you thinking about how your actions have impacts on the environment and a sustainable future.

Let's get stuck in.

Hi Eoin, let's get started. What does your company do?

Go Climate Positive is a carbon certification programme for small and medium sized businesses. Most business owners we speak to know they need to do something about their carbon footprint, but don’t know where to start.

Our single membership fee includes everything you need for a complete carbon management system; we calculate your carbon footprint, help you make plans to reduce and offset it and help you talk about what you are doing in a transparent and honest way.

That's great Eoin, and something we should all be considering. Do you foresee any challenges for the business in the coming years?

We expect there to be a huge growth in demand for carbon certification as government policy tightens up to meet its zero-carbon commitments and demand for low-carbon products/services increases from both consumers and businesses.

It's been a difficult few years for numbering reasons, are you optimistic, realistic or pessimistic about 2022 and beyond?

I’m naturally an optimist and purely in terms of our own business we expect demand to grow. However, it is impossible to ignore the wider effects of fuel price increases and the situation in Ukraine and I do think these will have a dampening effect on the economy.

In the medium-term I believe that the low-carbon transition will be good for business, driving down costs and providing a stimulus for innovation.

If you had the ability to instantly change one area of your business, what would it be?

That's an easy one! To have the capacity to serve all SMEs in the country.

An excellent goal to have Eoin! Currently, what is the most important KPI in your business?

We measure the total greenhouse gas emissions eliminated, saved and offset by all our members. This is a measure of the positive impact we are having on climate change.

Being a business owner can be a daunting task, as we are sure you agree, how would you describe your management style?

My management style is focussed on empowerment. My job is to ensure that the team have the right tools, knowledge and support and that they understand what we are trying to achieve. Then my job is to get out of their way so they can deliver.

And how do you manage to stay motivated each day?

Knowing that I am helping to safeguard the future for my daughter by helping to speed up the low-carbon transition.

That is a powerful motivator Eoin! For a final question, tell us what makes your business stand out?

Go Climate Positive is unusual in that it is specifically designed to address the challenges that SMEs have in creating a carbon reduction strategy. Unlike traditional consultants we are affordable, offering a low fixed monthly fee. Unlike software solutions we guide you through the process rather than leaving you to figure it out yourself. We help you drive meaningful carbon reduction, in line with best practice, without needing to employ a specialist yourself.

Thank you Eoin for sharing your time and thoughts with us.

If you are looking for support in making year-on -year reduction in your carbon footprint then Go Climate Positive is the place for you. They can work with you to review your current practices, calculate your carbon outputs and work with you to find practical ways to reduce where you can, and offset what you can't reduce. Their continued support helps you stay on track with tips, advice and support from other business working on the same targets as yourself.
